Now, nearly 40 years later, The Super Mario Bros. The first platformer starring Mario-an arcade game-debuted all the way back in July 1983. Though Mario games may be silly, narratively vapid, and even frivolous at times, the core mechanics and sense of adventure in these titles have inarguably pushed the medium further-and just as much as any other leading franchise in the history of gaming. The biggest name in video games is also one of the most recognizable mascots in the entire world. The game's goal is to reach the final linear milestone, but to do so you have to collect a required amount of Shine Sprites as you go along. Upon arrival, Mario finds that the once-pristine island has been vandalized with graffiti and toxic goop. Mario sets out for the prestigious tropical retreat Isle Delfino, for a well-deserved vacation with Princess Peach, Toadsworth, and other many-colored Toads. In 2020 Super Mario Sunshine was re-released on the Nintendo Switch as part of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars compilation, commemorating the 35th anniversary of the series. It was followed by Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii. It is the first Mario platformer since Super Mario 64's release six years earlier. It was released in Japan on July 19, 2002, in North America on August 26, 2002, and in Europe on October 4, 2002. Super Mario Sunshine is a 3D platformer developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo GameCube.
